Richardson’s Running Mate Audition?

Right after Obama won Iowa, I suggested that Bill Richardson might be the right choice for his Running Mate.

Today, Richardson endorsed Obama. If this speech was an audition tape to be Barack’s running mate, we may have just found our man. He was funny. He was smart. He was good-natured. He was personal. He was Hispanic. He was Vice Presidential.

And the Davenetics logo-inspired facial hair didn’t hurt either.

Bush and Cheney Crush You in War of Attrition

During a recent interview with ABC News, Dick Cheney was confronted with the fact that a large percentage of Americans feel the war in Iraq is hopeless. His response:

“So.”

Love him or hate him, he has a point. After all, not too many Americans are paying attention to the war in Iraq at all.

Take a look at the latest search numbers as reported by the Lycos 50. You’ll find that while Paris Hilton has managed to hold her own even in the days of Spitzer and Dupre, searches for news about Iraq have dropped almost completely off the radar – and that’s during a week when almost every media outlet provided heavy coverage of the war’s fifth anniversary.

There is a moral to this story and it’s pretty scary.

New Governor’s Cheating Story on Day One

Well, it’s good to finally have this out in the open. The suspense was killing me.

Slums of Beverly Hills

The latest flick in Dave’s Drive-in is the great Slums of Beverly Hills. If you liked Alan Arkin in Little Miss Sunshine, you’ll love this 1998 performance. The movie also features a funny performance by David Krumholtz (of Numbers fame) and Natasha Lyonne and Marisa Tomei.

The movie was written and directed by Tamara Jenkins who is getting much recognition for her latest movie, The Savages.

Enjoy the show…

Three Lessons From the Spitzer Debacle

Here are three lessons from the Eliot Spitzer scandal:

1. Almost every time we see someone in public life adamantly talking down and/or aggressively going after some group or groups, that someone turns out to be into the behavior or types of behavior against which they crusade. The amazing thing is that we still feign shock.

2. Spitzer’s career is over. This is not Bill Clinton saying Ok, Ok, so I fucked another one. This is guy whose career is built on loudly putting bad guys away (including those who deal in prostitution). Brand is everything in public life and this guy just went from being Santa Claus to the Heat Miser.

3. The common wisdom out there is that Spitzer’s fall is yet more evidence that no one who is good can remain so after a few years in politics. The game gets to them, and the ego, power, and narcissism that are the currency of public life ultimately and inevitably destroy everything we thought we could trust.

Here’s another angle. What if the truth is that politics draws in those with such weaknesses? What if Spitzer became a crusader against the bad guys specifically (if not necessarily consciously) to rise in the political ranks? Want to find people who are doing their jobs for the reasons you had hoped? Find the ones who stay in those jobs and don’t view higher office as a higher calling.

The Shawshank Comedians?

Last December, two inmates escaped from New Jersey jail cell. They were clearly pretty big fans of Shawshank Redemption.

They, over time, dug a large hole in the wall of their cell. They covered that growing hole with a pin-up poster. And then one day, they split (managing to overcome a pretty big fence covered with razor wire).

They have both been caught. And on Monday, both pleaded not guilty to escape charges.

There was a giant hole in their cell. And they were both caught being outside the prison. And they’re both going with the not guilty plea.

I sense a future in politics.
