Pete Townshend’s Deaf Jam

Pete Townshend is warning iPod users about the associated risks of hearing loss. On his blog, Pete blames his use of studio headphones for damaging his ears:

I have unwittingly helped to invent and refine a type of music that makes its principal components deaf. Hearing loss is a terrible thing because it cannot be repaired. If you use an iPod or anything like it, or your child uses one, you MAY be OK … But my intuition tells me there is terrible trouble ahead.

Question: Does an over the counter consumer iPod even approach the volume levels experienced by a lifelong rocker? Isn’t this sort of like The Who giving advice on properly caring for your instruments?

By the way, when a rock star makes a comment about hearing loss, it tends to get just a little coverage the media.

Rock on.
