The Murtha of all Battles

The Murtha pullout plan continues to fuel an angry debate on the hill. Republicans are trying to push a vote on the topic of immediate withdrawal (which almost no one is in favor of).

Dennis Hastert explains: “We want to make sure that we support our troops that are fighting in Iraq and Afghanistan.”

We probably need a more intelligent definition of what it means to support our troops; one that is more closely linked to what our troops are out there to support.

On a purely political level, if this series of debates and arguments leaves us still with the now absurb idea that debating military strategy and foreign policy is somehow treasonous towards the troops, thinking Americans will come out the losers yet again.

On Whose Behalf

Chistopher Dickey shares a very thoughtful Newsweek piece on why Murtha is probably right and why the current policy in Iraq is music to the ears of some of America’s enemies.

Murtha Reports for Duty

Murtha takes the gloves off:

I like guys who’ve never been there that criticize us who’ve been there. I like that. I like guys who got five deferments and never been there and send people to war and then don’t like to hear suggestions about what needs to be done.

I still would’ve liked to hear the tougher talk during the elections and the run-up to the war. But I said it then and I’ll say it now:

One of the most effective things the Dems can do is to out the Bush team strategy of personally destroying critics even in when an insane amount of hypocrisy is required to do so.
