Meet the Symptoms

Nicholas Kristof on those other root causes of terror:

Under Pakistan’s hudood laws, a woman who reports that she has been raped is liable to be arrested for adultery or fornication – since she admits to sex outside of marriage – unless she can provide four male eyewitnesses to the rape.

And this is just one example of the political and social (and quite often sexual) madness that has smashed its way through entire societies. Want to address terrorism? This is as good a place as any to start.

Suicide bombings and other forms of terrorism are political to be sure. But there is more than a little psychological trauma at work.

How thoroughly broken does one’s psyche have to be before blowing oneself up sounds like a reasonable option? And remember, we’re not talking about a handful of cult members. We’re talking about what is gradually (though not gradually enough) becoming a movement.

Concentration is important!
