The Pen Behind the Teleprompter

Michael Gerson, W’s lead speechwriter over the past four years, is stepping down and moving into a policy role.

From messaging to policy? That seems like a major step down in this era.

Give Gerson a lot of credit. Writing speeches for W is sort of like writing songs for Ashlee Simpson. One must work within some very limiting constraints. But there is little doubt that Gerson managed to do just that. The President will long be remembered for some historic lines in important speeches at critical times. He also was able to use the coded plainspeak that took him from even in his first presidential election to 3 million up in his second.

My guess is that we’ll hear the difference almost immediately.

Concentration is important!
