As expected, Colin Powell has left the building. Or at least, he will leave the building as soon as his successor is named. The early buzz leads one to believe that Condoleezza Rice will be W’s pick.
The Powell tenure was an interesting one to say the least. The centrists and liberals always thought of Powell as a friend in the administration, an odd man out that would provide a voice of restraint and reason. This version of reality was supported by many books and inside accounts of the administration.
But it was never confirmed by Powell himself. And I doubt that it will be even after he departs.
So did Powell essentially agree with the foreign policy course rolled out by this administrion, or did he place his loyalty to W above his loyalty to what he believes is right for America?
