I referenced the issue of how Black women are portrayed in extreme rap videos a couple of weeks ago. Now it looks like the subject is being given a more organized voice. Women at Spelman College planned a protest that led to the cancellation of an upcoming Nelly Show. The main issue was a Nelly video which borders on and then goes beyond soft porn and includes the rapper sliding a credit card through a woman’s backside.
Credit card fetishes aside, most guys would be lying if they said they didn’t find some music videos pretty hot. From MTV to BET, the product being sold after all is sex. But the trend of demeaning Black women in videos (combined with the fact that the most offensive of these videos are being broadcast exclusively on BET) is troubling and should have been addressed a long time ago.
