Dollars Going Straight to Video

It’s no secret that there are small movies that, after a modest showing at the box office, end up racking up the dvd sales and rentals. But the impact that DVDs have had on the movie industry goes way beyond that.

Last weekend, Kill Bill 2 won at the box office. At the time time, the DVD from part one was making even more money. DVDs outearning the box office has become the norm in Hollywood. In the first three months of this year, Americans spent $1.78 billion at the box office. During the same period, we spent $4.8 million to buy and rent DVDs and videos. Samll movies are given a second chance while big movies are often enjoying a second helping of revenues piled higher than the first.

Concentration is important!
